Child Abuse

Child abuse is the physical, emotional or sexual abuse and/or neglect of children.

Governments around the world have defined their own legal interpretation of child abuse, but all recognise that there are four broad categories of abuse: physical, sexual, psychological or emotional abuse and neglect – and each of these containing various other categories.

Any of these crimes against our children can have devastating and long term effects for the child, their family and the wider community.

Some of these forms of abuse don’t happen with pre-meditated intent, but from a momentary lapse of a few seconds or from the lack of understanding the effect certain behaviour can have on a child.

With this section of the site we are aiming to raise awareness, and we would also welcome any new members or volunteers with experience within these areas to help us help more people.

Violence against children is not okay.
It is not okay at any level – from verbal abuse to violent assault!

Child abuse is the term used when an adult harms a child or a young person under the age of 18.

It is a heart wrenching fact that children aged under one are the ones, who are most likely to be victims of murder than any other.

Abuse comes in different forms and is not only physical – mental and emotional abuse can do as much damage to a child’s future as physical or sexual abuse.

Every 10 seconds, an incident of child abuse is reported and
everyday 3 children die as a result of abuse.
